Weβre always working to improve the Cyclone Rake, and weβre excited to announce a change that brings better performance and reliability to our electric start models. Starting in Fall 2025, the XL and Z-10 Cyclone Rake units will come equipped with a new Lithium-Ion battery.
Whatβs Changing?
Battery Type: The traditional lead-acid battery is being replaced by a more efficient Lithium-Ion battery.
Design Updates:
The new battery is physically smaller and lighter.
It comes with a redesigned mounting platform and top hold-down bracket.
Digital display with a voltage meter.
A Battery Management System (BMS) is the βbrainsβ behind a lithium-ion battery pack. It constantly monitors key factors like voltage, current, temperature, and the state of charge to keep the cells operating safely and efficiently.
Why the Switch?
Lithium-Ion batteries offer several customer-friendly benefits:
Better performanceβmore reliable engine starts.
Longer lifeβless cell degradation between uses.
Lower weightβeasier handling during installation or maintenance.
Fewer warranty issuesβgreater durability means fewer headaches.
Will It Work With Older Cyclone Rakes?
Yes. The upgraded Lithium-Ion battery is backward compatible with previous electric start models:
The same wire connectors are used.
The new mounting platform fits in the same spot as the old one.
The Electric Start system works exactly the sameβno operational changes.
You can still use the same charger you already own.
Some folks have asked why the instructions say not to connect the black wire on our electric-start engines. Hereβs the breakdown:
Why it says βdo not connectβ
The black wire was originally used on older battery systems to feed power from the engineβs alternator back into the battery.
Our new lithium-ion battery doesnβt charge that way β it holds a strong charge for many uses and recharges only through the wall charger when the batteryβs indicator panel shows itβs time.
Leaving the unused black wires disconnected ensures the system runs safely and efficiently with the lithium-ion setup.
Summary:
β
Leave both thin black wires disconnected.
β
The thick black wire stays as it is β already grounded and ready to go.
β
Always charge the lithium battery using the wall charger, not the engine.
If you already own a Cyclone Rake XL or Z-10 with electric start, we have a retrofit kit available to help you make the switch if desired or if you are replacing your old battery. You can find that HERE.

FAQ
Can I just go buy a lead-acid battery somewhere else?
We strongly recommend against it. Our current parts, including the battery tray and wiring guidance, are designed specifically for the lithium system to ensure reliability. The lead-acid batteries often suffered from charging issues with the engine alternator, which is why we switched.
Why isn't this loose black wire connected?
That thin black wire was used for the old lead-acid battery. With your new lithium system, the battery manages itself and is charged ONLY by the wall charger. Leaving that wire disconnected is intentional to prevent overcharging and damaging your new battery.
My lead-acid battery works fine. Do I have to switch?
No, not at all. If your current battery is working, please continue to use it! The charging system works differently for lead-acid. Just know that when it eventually needs replacement, you'll upgrade to the new kit then
Do I need to change my charger for the new battery?
No, you can still use the same charger you already own.
How can I get assistance if I have questions about the new battery?
