Fixing a Loose Throttle Control on Your XR950 Engine: Quick and Easy Adjustment Guide

Prev Next

A loose throttle control can be frustrating when operating your Cyclone Rake, leading to inconsistent engine speed and reduced control. Fortunately, adjusting the throttle lever resistance is a quick and simple process you can do yourself.

Why Throttle Tension Matters

Ensures consistent engine speed
Prevents unintentional speed changes
Improves overall equipment control
Enhances operational safety

Tools Needed for Adjustment

🔧 Use a 10mm open end wrench
🔦 Good lighting
🛠 Clean work surface

Step-by-Step Adjustment Process

1. Locate the Throttle Lever

  • Found on the side of the XR950 engine

  • Typically positioned near the engine control panel

2. Identify the Adjustment Mechanism

  • Look for a 10 mm nut at the tension adjustment point

  • Usually located near the base of the throttle lever

3. Adjust the Tension

🔹 Use a 10mm open-end wrench
🔹 Turn clockwise to increase resistance
🔹 Turn counterclockwise to decrease resistance
🔹 Make small, quarter-turn adjustments
🔹 Test the throttle movement after each adjustment

NOTE:

You will notice that there is a loose phillips head screw that it is going into a nut that has a hole in the side of it, this is normal and correct. It is for a remote throttle cable that the Cyclone Rake does not use.

Pro Tips for Best Results

Make incremental adjustments for fine-tuning
Avoid over-tightening, which can make movement stiff
Ensure smooth, consistent throttle movement

When to Seek Professional Help

⚠ Adjustments don’t resolve the issue
Visible damage to the throttle mechanism
Unusual engine behavior persists after adjustment

Safety Reminder

Always work with a cool engine
Disconnect the spark plug wire before maintenance
Follow all manufacturer’s safety guidelines

FAQ

How do I adjust the throttle for 8HP and 10HP engines?

If the throttle on your 8HP engine won’t stay in place, tighten the nut labeled #427 in the diagram slightly—this will secure the throttle. The adjustment process is the same as for the XR950 throttle, as their setups are nearly identical.
