Why Is Debris Left Under or Around the Mower Deck?

Prev Next

Finding debris left behind after mowing can be frustrating, especially when you're expecting clean results from your Cyclone Rake. If you're noticing debris remaining under your mower deck or being pushed to the sides, there are several common causes and solutions to consider.

Possible Causes

  • The mower blades are not engaged or are not at the proper height

  • Cyclone Rake engine is not running at full throttle

  • Driving too fast over the debris

  • Using mulching blades on the mower deck

  • System is clogged somewhere

  • Attempting to collect heavy, wet, or matted debris

  • "Blowout" from the space between the mower deck and ground

Effective Solutions

Proper Mower Setup:

  • Always ensure your mower deck is engaged when operating the Cyclone Rake

  • Set your mower deck at the correct height for the type and amount of debris you're collecting

  • For standard leaf collection, a medium deck height often works best

Optimize Cyclone Rake Performance:

  • Always slide the throttle control all the way to the "rabbit" position for maximum suction

  • Use a slower gear/speed on your mower for the best results and most thorough collection

  • If using mulching blades, switch to standard or high-lift blades which are designed to move debris upward

Check for System Obstructions:

  • Inspect for clogs along the entire vacuum systemβ€”from the mower deck to the neck of the collector bag

  • Clear any blockages before continuing operation

Handling Difficult Debris:

  • For heavy, wet, or matted material, try a two-step approach: first pass at a low blade setting, then allow remaining debris to dry for a day or two before making a second pass

  • Breaking up the job helps ensure complete collection even in challenging conditions

Managing Deck Blowout:

  • When operating over bare dirt, pavement, or mulch, air can escape between the deck and ground

  • The mower deck needs to form some kind of "seal" with the ground (either with grass or thick leaves) to prevent too much air from escaping

  • This common issue (known as "mower deck blowout") may require some trial and error to resolve

  • Solutions vary based on your specific mower, terrain, and collection conditions
