Why Is My Cyclone Rake Pull-Start Engine Smoking?

Prev Next

When you notice smoke coming from your Cyclone Rake engine, it's important to understand that some smoke can be normal, while persistent smoking may indicate an issue that needs attention.

Normal Break-In Smoke

If you've just started using your Cyclone Rake, some initial smoking is completely normal:

  • New engines often produce more smoke during the first few starts

  • This "break-in" smoke typically dissipates after the engine has run for a few minutes

  • The smoke should decrease with each subsequent use as the engine components properly seat

Common Causes of Persistent Smoking

If your engine continues to smoke after several uses, here are the most likely causes and solutions:

1. Improper Oil Level

  • Too much oil can cause smoking as the excess burns off

  • Too little oil can cause overheating and smoking

  • Solution: Check the oil level and adjust according to the specifications in your Briggs & Stratton owner's manual

2. Incorrect Oil Type

  • Using the wrong oil weight or classification can cause smoking

  • Solution: Verify you're using the recommended oil type (refer to page 13 in your Owner's Manual)

  • Remember that temperature affects which oil is appropriate:

    • Above 32Β°F: Use SAE 30 or SAE 10W30

    • Below 32Β°F: Use SAE 5W30

3. Dirty Air Filter

  • A clogged air filter can cause the engine to run rich and smoke

  • Solution: Inspect, clean, or replace the air filter as needed

4. Operating On Steep Terrain

  • Excessive slopes can cause oil to pool improperly in the engine

  • Solution: Always travel up and down slopes, never across them

  • Avoid operating on slopes greater than 15 degrees

FAQ

Why is there residue in my new engine?

Engines are tested at the factory with gas and oil before shipping. While those fluids are vacuumed out afterward, a small amount of residue may remain, which is totally normal and won’t affect performance. Your engine ships dry, but a bottle of oil is included so you can fill it before first use.
